SEN Primary School Teaching Assistant

About the role

Vision for Education is seeking an experienced Teaching Assistant to work in an SEN Primary School in Southam on a full-time basis.

Hours 08:30-3pm Monday-Friday

About the role

To provide dedicated 1:1 support for a primary pupil, with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and challenging behaviour. The role focuses on promoting emotional regulation, positive behaviour, engagement in learning, and overall wellbeing within a structured and supportive school environment.

  • Provide consistent 1:1 support tailored to the individual needs of the pupils.
  • Support the child in accessing the curriculum, adapting activities where necessary under the direction of the class teacher.
  • Implement individual behaviour support plans and risk assessments.
  • Use positive behaviour management strategies to support emotional regulation and reduce incidents of challenging behaviour.
  • Build a strong, trusting relationship to promote security and engagement.
  • Support the child during transitions and unstructured times (e.g., break, lunch).
  • Encourage the development of social skills and positive peer relationships.
  • Monitor, record, and report on progress, behaviour, and wellbeing.
  • Liaise effectively with teachers, SENCO, parents/carers, and external professionals.
  • Maintain high standards of safeguarding, confidentiality, and professional conduct.

About the school:

  • A primary school setting that caters to young learners aged 5 to 11, with an emphasis on providing extensive support, particularly for those with additional needs, supporting a range of needs including: - Social Emotional Mental Health, Autism/ADHD and non-verbal pupils.

About you:

  • Experience working with children, ideally in an educational setting.
  • Experience working with primary-aged children ideall.
  • Experience supporting children with SEMH needs and behavioural challenges.
  • Knowledge of positive behaviour support strategies.
  • Ability to remain calm, patient, and resilient in challenging situations.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and child welfare.
  • Nurturing and empathetic approach.
  • Clear, consistent boundary setting.
  • Strong de-escalation skills.
  • Flexible and adaptable.
  • Observant and proactive.
  • Ability to promote independence while offering appropriate support.
  • Able to obtain suitable references and a DBS check.
