We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEND Learning Support Assistant to support pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs at a specialist SEMH school in Southend-on-Sea.

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEND Learning Support Assistant to support pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs at a specialist SEMH school in Southend-on-Sea. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of young people who require consistent, nurturing and structured support to thrive.

You will work closely with teachers, therapists and pastoral staff to help pupils engage with learning, regulate emotions and develop positive relationships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SEMH and additional SEND needs

  • Support pupils with emotional regulation, behaviour for learning and social development

  • Implement individual support plans and behaviour strategies

  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils

  • Assist with classroom activities and adapt learning materials as needed

  • Support pupils during unstructured times (breaks, transitions, etc.)

  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff, SENCO and external professionals

  • Has experience working with children or young people with SEMH and/or SEND (desirable)

  • Is calm, patient, resilient and emotionally intelligent

  • Can remain consistent and positive in challenging situations

  • Understands trauma-informed and relational approaches (or is keen to learn)

  • Has strong communication and teamwork skills

  • Is committed to safeguarding and promoting pupil wellbeing
