Teacher and support staff pay scales in the UK
share

For anyone coming from overseas to work in education in the UK, one of the questions that we often get asked is: ‘What is the pay like?’ The truth is that pay will vary depending on a few different factors. Here is what you can expect to get paid when working in the UK.

Teachers

There are different pay scales for teachers depending on where in the country you are teaching. For example, in London teachers get paid slightly more. Generally, you can expect a teacher’s annual salary for a full-time permanent role to be between £25,714 and £36,961 for England and Wales, and between £26,948 and £42,624 for London. Pay also depends on your skills and experiences as an unqualified teacher would expect a salary between £18,419 and £28,735, but a senior qualified teacher who has more responsibilities could receive between £38,690 and £41,604. You can find more details about teachers’ pay on the government website.

Support staff

Most schools follow the local government pay scale for support staff, although this varies depending on the type of school you work at. Again, salaries vary depending on the role, responsibilities, and educational setting. Typically, annual salaries for a permanent full-time support staff role start at around £18,300.

Supply staff

For supply teachers and support staff working for an agency there are usually differences in the pay process. For example, when working with us at Edwin Education you will be paid weekly via the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system by our own in-house Payroll team. Whereas permanent teachers are employed directly by the school and are usually paid monthly. Find out more about our pay for supply staff.

Difference from overseas wages

These salaries might seem different to what you are used to back home. For example, to Australian teachers it might seem like the pay is lower to what you expected, but perhaps a teacher from New Zealand will be pleasantly surprised to get paid more. Wherever you have travelled from there is likely to be some difference in wages, however the amazing experiences you will get from traveling, making new friends and expanding your teaching repertoire, will feel invaluable.
