About the role

Cover Supervisor – Secondary Schools | Youth Worker Experience Ideal

Cover Supervisor | Secondary Schools | Youth Worker & Pastoral Experience Welcomed

Do you have experience working with young people and are looking for a rewarding role within secondary schools? Have you worked as a youth worker, support worker, mentor, or community worker and want to transfer those skills into education?

Job Overview

  • Role: Cover Supervisor

  • School Type: Secondary Schools

  • Key Stages: KS3 and KS4

  • Contract: Daily Supply / Long-Term Supply

  • Training: Cover Supervisor Training Programme provided

  • Pay: Competitive daily rates (PAYE)

The School

You will be working in welcoming and inclusive secondary schools that place a strong emphasis on pastoral care, behaviour support, and safeguarding. Schools offer:

  • Clear behaviour and safeguarding systems

  • Supportive senior leadership and pastoral teams

  • Pre-planned lessons and structured routines

  • A calm and respectful learning environment

  • Strong support for Cover Supervisors and new staff

These schools value staff who can build relationships with students and maintain consistency in the classroom.

The Role

As a Cover Supervisor, you will:

  • Supervise classes of around 30 students in the absence of the class teacher

  • Deliver pre-prepared lesson plans across a range of secondary subjects

  • Use your youth work skills to engage students and manage behaviour positively

  • Take accurate registers and follow safeguarding procedures

  • Provide clear feedback and handover notes for teaching staff

You are not expected to be a subject specialist — your strength will be your ability to manage behaviour, communicate clearly, and support learning.

Training and Support

If you are new to working in schools, Vision for Education will support you through our Cover Supervisor Training Programme, covering:

  • Classroom and behaviour management strategies

  • Safeguarding and professional expectations in schools

  • Building positive relationships with secondary-aged students

  • Confidence in leading a classroom setting

This makes the role an excellent step for youth workers exploring education, teacher training, or long-term school-based roles.

Requirements

The ideal Cover Supervisor will have:

  • Experience working with young people (youth work, mentoring, support work, sports coaching, community roles, etc.)

  • Confidence leading and managing groups of young people

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills

  • A positive, calm, and consistent approach

  • Eligibility to work in the UK and a DBS (or willingness to apply)

A degree is beneficial but not essential if you have strong relevant experience.

What Vision for Education Offers

  • Competitive daily rates, paid weekly via PAYE

  • Guaranteed Pay Scheme (subject to availability)

  • Pension contributions

  • Ongoing CPD and professional development

  • Social and networking events

  • A dedicated secondary education consultant to support you throughout your placement
