SEN / SEMH Trainee Teaching Assistant – Bristol & Bath

Are you passionate about supporting children and young people with additional needs? Would you like to begin a rewarding career in education where you can make a real difference every day?

About the Role

As a Trainee Teaching Assistant, you’ll gain valuable, hands-on experience supporting children and young people aged 4–19 across a range of specialist and inclusive schools in the Bristol and Bath region.

You’ll work with pupils who have a variety of needs, including:

  • Autism (ASC)

  • ADHD

  • Social, Emotional & Mental Health (SEMH)

  • Challenging Behaviour

  • Learning Difficulties

  • Profound & Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)

This is an agency-based role, offering a mix of short-term, long-term, and ad-hoc placements depending on school needs. While work cannot be guaranteed, successful trainees will receive paid placements and ongoing mentoring to help them develop and progress.

Following a successful interview, safeguarding checks, and completion of your introductory training, you’ll begin a paid school placement to put your learning into practice. After five days of successful work and a positive reference, you can progress into a SEN Teaching Assistant role.

About the Schools

You’ll be placed in welcoming and inclusive SEN schools across Bristol, Bath, Yate, and the surrounding areas, where staff are passionate about helping every pupil reach their full potential.

These schools offer:

  • Small class sizes and tailored learning support

  • A strong focus on communication, emotional wellbeing, and life skills

  • Collaborative and supportive staff teams

  • Ongoing opportunities for professional growth and CPD

Easily accessible from South Bristol, Emersons Green, Bath, Keynsham, Yate, and nearby areas.

✅ Requirements

To be considered, you will:

  • Have a passion for supporting children and young people.

  • Be eager to complete your training and ongoing CPD.

  • Be patient, empathetic, and enthusiastic about learning new skills.

  • Be willing to pay for an Enhanced DBS check and register with the Update Service.

Experience in education, childcare, or care work is desirable but not essential - full training and guidance are provided.

Why Join Vision for Education?

  • Free access to high-quality, accredited training.

  • Paid, hands-on experience in local SEN settings.

  • Dedicated support from our specialist consultants and school mentors.

  • A clear pathway to a permanent role as a qualified SEN Teaching Assistant.

Salary: £13.68 per hour (PAYE, dependent on experience and training)
