For some educators, supply work may be seen as a temporary solution, something to bridge the gap between permanent roles. But at Vision for Education, we see it differently. Supply experience is more than a job; it’s the foundation for building a rewarding career. Whether you’re newly qualified, returning to education, or exploring your next step, supply work can open doors you might not have expected.
The power of experience across different schools
One of the biggest advantages of supply work is the opportunity to experience a wide range of school environments. From early years settings to secondary school classrooms, supply staff quickly build a depth of experience that can take years to develop in a single role.
You gain:
-
Exposure to different teaching styles and leadership approaches
-
Confidence in adapting to new classrooms and student needs
-
A clearer understanding of the environment where you thrive
This variety doesn’t just make you more adaptable; it makes you more employable.
From supply to something more permanent
Supply can also be a powerful pathway into long-term and permanent roles.
By working in different schools, you’re able to:
-
Build relationships with staff and leadership teams
-
Demonstrate your skills in real classroom settings
-
Leave a lasting impression that can lead to future opportunities
Many schools prefer to hire someone they already know and trust, and supply gives you the chance to show exactly what you can offer.
Lily’s story: finding the right fit
For one of our candidates, supply work became the foundation of a truly rewarding and unexpected journey.
After initially training as a ballet teacher at the Royal Academy of Dance in London, a knee injury led her to pursue a new career path. Moving away from London and stepping into agency work brought its own challenges, particularly the pressure of adjusting to new environments.
However, Lily embraced the flexibility of supply work, gaining experience across a wide range of settings, from nursery through to sixth form. This variety even led to her taking on a GCSE dance teaching role for a full term, highlighting the breadth of opportunities available.
When Lily joined Vision for Education, things began to change. By taking the time to understand Lily’s goals, preferences and travel needs, our team matched her with a long-term placement in October 2024. One that proved to be the right fit both professionally and personally.
Working in a supportive school environment and with a pupil with complex needs provided invaluable experience. Throughout the placement, our team remained in close contact, offering encouragement, advocating on their behalf, and ensuring the role continued to meet their expectations. That placement soon turned into something more.
When the school offered a permanent position, it marked turning point. With that stability came the chance to pursue a long- held passion, launching a weekly dance club, with plans to expand it even further.
“I was honestly elated. It was the first opportunity I had to settle into one place, and that felt incredible. With that stability came the chance to pursue a long-held passion, launching a weekly dance club. Now I’m working towards bringing my dance club to other schools, which wouldn’t have been possible without the support and experience I’ve gained from Vision” - Lily
Mandy’s story: building relationships
Mandy was drawn to education by a desire to support young people not just academically, but through their personal journeys. When she saw an advertisement for a temporary learning support assistant role, she decided to give it a go. Mandy focused on building relationships within the school, she greeted students with a smile, listened to them, and make sure they knew they had someone who cared.
Overtime, those small efforts build trust. Students began to rely on her, and colleagues recognised her dedication with support from the school’s leadership, Mandy applied for a permanent role.
It was the strong relationships she builds, with both students and staff, that helped her turn a temporary position into a permanent one. For Mandy, the experience showed that taking a chance and genuinely connecting with others can open unexpected doors.
"My temporary role was able to lead into a permanent position as I was able to build positive working relationships with the colleagues and young people at the school” - Mandy.

-
Be honest about your preferences – the right placement makes all the difference
-
Build strong relationships – they often lead to future opportunities
-
