SATs preparation: How teachers can support their students
Preparing your students for their SATs exams.

Where there’s an exam, there’s stress and the KS2 SATs are no exception. As Year 6 students across the country prepare for their first proper formal tests, it can be daunting for both children and teachers, but it’s important that staff maintain a positive atmosphere in the classroom and provide strategic support to help them thrive.

But how can teachers help reduce SATs stress?

Break down the content

As we know, SATs cover reading, writing and language and mathematics - and for some students it can be a lot to take in.

Breaking the content down into smaller manageable chunks helps them to retain the knowledge. Not only this but study schedules, focusing on small chunks of topics per week, allow the class to review and practice in depth. This method allows children to gain a better understanding and means they aren’t overwhelmed.

Past papers

Past papers are a great way of preparing pupils for exams as they provide insight as to what SATs papers look like, the layout and what they can expect. By working through past papers as a class or small group, children can gain a better understanding of how to answer questions effectively and within a good timeframe.

Completing past papers also allows teachers to see where improvements need to be made - whether it’s students needing to brush up on specific topics, the need to slow down or speed up their pace, or practicing writing neatly and clearly for the marker to understand.

Simulating the test environment

Alongside getting used to past papers, it’s vital that students are introduced to exam conditions. This helps students to properly understand the environment they will be expected to work in when it comes to sitting their SATs in real life.

From practicing entering the room in silence and sitting away from other pupils (their friends), to answering questions within a strict timeframe and following strict instructions, it’s important that students are prepared and confident when they walk into the exam hall.

Online resources

Technology is a huge part of everyday life, so including interactive online learning into revision for KS2 SATs is a no brainer. With a broad range of educational websites available, all with games, questions and answers, it’s a great way to develop their skills and knowledge, allowing them to focus on specific SATs topics.

Develop habits

Teachers should encourage their pupils to engage in regular, short study sessions, whether on their own at home or school or in small groups - focusing on key topics that they may need to improve on. Teachers can explore study techniques such as summarising, flashcards and speaking to others.

Wellbeing

The thought of tests can put a lot of pressure on pupils, leading to increased anxiety and stress. It’s important that teachers encourage good sleep, healthy eating and exercise in the run-up to SATs, as they have a great benefit to their mental and physical wellbeing. Pupils should also be encouraged to take breaks during study sessions and engage in activities that they enjoy - this helps manage their stress levels.

Teachers also need to note that pupils pick up on adult stress, so it’s important, even when you are feeling stressed, to model calmness. Speaking to pupils about nerves is also important as it helps them to understand that nerves are completely normal - encouraging them to speak about their feelings to someone they are comfortable with.
